Triathlon Beauty Tips

I really love having long hair but since I have started training I have had to cut my hair a few times due to damage caused by swimming in a heavily chlorinated pool. I love swimming but seriously it has done a number on my hair. Last time I was in LA getting my hair cut I told Nobu (my hairstylist extraordinaire) about this problem. He told me he has lots of clients who swim and it really helps if you put baby oil on the ends before.

Thursday night I had a party to go to with my sister. Since it wouldn’t be starting until late and since I had plans on Friday I was forced to move my swim to Thursday. This meant packing all my belongings for the next few days into my ugly Asics gym bag (I purposely bought an ugly bag so no one would steal it). I decided to take Nobu’s advice before my swim and carefully coated my ends with baby oil. Swim went fine and I showered at the gym to save time. However, when I was blow drying my hair I noticed that it wasn’t drying. Actually, it only looked wet, the truth was that the oil was still on my hair and wouldn’t come off. So I ran to the bathroom and tried to wet it again – No Luck. Already running massively later for my party I threw it into a bun as there was nothing else I could do. The oil finally came out after about another two shampoos. Oh, the trials and tribulations of being a triathlete. But seriously, does anyone out there have any good tips on this one???

My stylist at Aveeda told me to just wet your hair before you put your cap on. Because hair is poreus, once it's saturated, it won't absorb any more liquid ie chlorine.

I'm training for my first triathlon as well, but I think it's a lot easier beauty care is a lot less of a problem for male triathletes.

Oh yeah, you might like Triathlon Forums.

I do not have any tips, but I do totally feel for you. I drenched my entire head of hair in baby oil one summer at sleepaway camp to protect it from chlorine damage, but I wasn't clever enough just to do the ends. Needless to say, I looked like the greaseball of the world for a week. Good thing it was sleepaway camp, or Bonnie would have freaked.

If you soak your hair with water before putting on a swim cap, it'll help limit the damage. Silicone caps also seem to be less leaky than latex, so that's worth a switch if you haven't already. If you want to go even further, slather some normal conditioner on the ends after wetting it, then the cap - as your head heats up it'll actually help it sink in and you'll end your workout with softer hair than you start (and without the greasy problems of the oil).

olive oil. Put it on the ends (a little) before you hop in the pool, mix a little with conditioner and use as a mask for your hair, it worked wonders for me.

I'm having the same problem while keeping up my triathlon training over winter!

I'm going to try...

Before swim: Saturating hair in the shower, applying conditioner (with a little bit of olive oil mixed in) and wearing my swim cap.

During swim: Try to keep swim cap on when diving.

After swim: Scrub with a salt scrub really well to get rid of all chlorine (I like to make my own using rock salt:). Wash hair using Aveda detox shampoo, and a colour care conditioner. Then dry and apply olive oil to my skin as a moisturiser. (Yeah, I'm crazy about extra virgin olive oil - it helps prevent skin cancer and aging.)
